I told you so...time to upgrade to 2.2.2

A few days ago I reported about a new WordPress vulnerability, and prophesied that as a result we would soon be witness to a new release of WordPress.

Well look who’s right. The powers-that-be at WordPress announced yesterday that two security-related releases are now available for users of the main 2.2 branch and the legacy 2.0 branch, i.e. versions 2.2.2 and 2.0.11. (Who’s still using the 2.0 branch – shame on you! Oh right, that would be me…don’t worry, not here!)

So get to work boys and girls! And don’t forget:

Back up your database!
Back up your theme (just in case)!
Deactivate all plugins!
Pray to your lord!
Upgrade!
Pray some more!
Reactivate your plugins!
Enter the URL of your site in your browser. Close your eyes. Open your eyes.
It worked!
or Aaarghhh – what are all these PHP errors?

Now rinse and repeat for all your blogs and clients’ blogs.

Joost de Valk says it’s much easier to upgrade from Subversion. Sounds scary to me, but for those of you who actually know what Subversion is, maybe this tip will help make this all-too-frequent event a little less painful.

I just tried upgrading to 2.3, what a nightmare!

I keep finding bugs which need ironed out. The latest of which is that the ‘Top Level Categories’ plugin doesn’t work. And to make it worse, the new plugin update feature says there’s a new update available for that plugin, but it directs to a different plugin and the original plugin page links to the external page for the plugin but the link is broken 🙁 Grrrr …

So I currently have the annoying ‘/category/’ in my URLs again. Hopefully I’ll find a solution soon.

Oy! I’ve only updated my local server, and I haven’t really tried out the new version on any of our existing sites. Now I’m nervous.

Unless you need the added functions I’d be inclined to leave it. You’ve got tags covered with a plugin and the canonical URLs aren’t likely to be a big drama unless you’ve got swathes of random URLs indexed by Google. AFAIK there aren’t any major security updates in this release to be concerned about. This is the first time I’ve ever upgraded a WordPress install as I haven’t seen any point in the past. As long as my entire install isn’t fried by some hacker I’m not too bothered really – I’m currently working on the theory that this is EXTREMELY unlikely. I’m more likely to fry my install from a bad upgrade than from a hacker. I do have uses for the canonical URLs and tags though (hadn’t bothered installing a plugin for it) hence have upgraded this time.

True, but I’ll tell you why I probably will upgrade: I have a feeling that too many plugins slow things down. With 2.3, we can stop using at least 4 plugins related to tags and URLs. I think it also has built in redirects, right? If so, that’s really useful too.

I found my solution 🙂 I was using an old version of the plugin! I eventually found the updated plugin on WordPress.org, oddly not via the link that the new auto update reminder thingy told me to use.

Hi there,
I’ve recently upgrade to 2.2.2 and it was working fine until few days ago. My image stop loading whenever I open the blog or in my admin space. Not a single image is working. I’ve try to find a solution to it but can’t find it anywhere. I was wondering if you can help me. I don’t know much about all those program and the words that other people use are like chinese character to me >_

Kat,
I’ve had a quick look at your site. I see you have fixed it so that images work with new posts now, but the old posts still don’t have any images.

It seems to be related to a URL problem (I think). Your older posts point the image files to http://mesmerize.monokuro.net/wp-content/uploads/ whereas your new posts point the image files to http://monokuro.net/mesmerize/wp-content/uploads/

I’m guessing you changed something somewhere along the line which has messed it up. Perhaps you changed your blog address in the options menu?

IF my theory above is correct, you could either go through and correct all the old image addresses manually or do a database query. Database queries are much more complicated but are also a lot faster as you can change all of the address at once.

I forgot to point out that the original files aren’t there though. So just changing the URLs wont work on it’s own. You need to put the files back first which I’m assuming were removed when you reinstalled (http://monokuro.net/mesmerize/?p=61)

First of all thank for your help. I did that before searching for help but the thing is all my files was there I reupload change the link and all but nothing seems to work. The only solution I found was to export my files and reinstall which work perfectly now. The same problem also happen to my other site which wasn’t on wordpress and it was fixed too. As for my older post I just didn’t bother reuploading and changing the url after reinstalling ^^’ lazy me. Anyway thank you very much for your help. There is one of my hostee who still has the problem but contacting them is a bit hard.
